In addition to running his popular Facebook group, Dental Nachos, he was also the co-director of the Shared Practices Ownership Accelerator. In this episode, he talks about the art of a smooth practice transition, and just when and how changes can be brought about so to preserve goodwill with both patients and the team. Thanks for listening!

Welcome back to the Shared Practices Podcast! Last week, we talked about the experiences of a successful FFS practice. This week, we hear a different story. We sat down with Dr. Stephanie Mapp, a dentist who sought to expand from her successful startup and purchased an FFS practice she felt had great prospects for growth. Her experiences thereafter became a lesson to herself--and ultimately our listeners--as to how obstacles like patient and staff attrition, location, and economic recession can spoil an otherwise fruitful FFS opportunity. We thank Dr. Mapp for her honesty and transparency and hope our listeners learn as much from this as we did!

Dr. Mapp is a 1994 graduate of the University of Florida College of Dentistry. She was a psychology major at UF and obtained early admission to the dental college after only three years of undergraduate work. Dr. Mapp continues to learn new techniques and the latest dental information by attending courses from some of the most prestigious and trusted names in dentistry in the country. She is Invisalign certified and a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association and Clay Women in Business.

In season 2 episode 37, George interviews Dr. Peter Bowman about his life as a FFS practice owner. Dr. Bowman talks about what he thinks is the main reason that a FFS practice can still be successful, how keeping familiarity during a transition is helpful, and how technology is a good value point. Dr. Bowman is one of the few dentists that is able to cultivate the “unicorn practice,” which is a high producing FFS practice. Thanks to Dr. Bowman for speaking to us about his journey!

Dr Peter is a California native with deep roots in Walpole, NH, Dr. Bowman is the oldest of three children.  He attended the University of Arizona to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology.  He earned his degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 2008.

In season 2 episode 36, George “G-money” interviews Dr. Drew Byrnes about his FFS experience. Dr. Byrnes graduated from UF in 2013 and now owns a FFS practice in a saturated market of Winter Park, FL. Dr. Byrnes talks about his early career of working in many different practices and searching for his own practice. Dr. Byrnes talks about a unique payment structure to get the deal done on his first FFS practice, tips on how he kept the practice successful during the transition, how he overcame staff and real estate issues, and his practice vision moving forward.

Links mentioned in show:

Dr. Drew Byrnes is a family and cosmetic dentist and a Central Florida native. He was born in Winter Park, FL and grew up in Altamonte Springs. He is a proud alumnus of Bishop Moore Catholic High School. We pick our discussion from last time with Dr. Justin Short on how to create that amazing patient experience in your office. The episode starts with when the patient first steps through the door. Dr. Short shows us how to differentiate your office from the competition with a little bit of outside the box thinking. We also learn about Justin’s 100% treatment acceptance strategy. We love Justin because he always gives us the straight answer even if it’s an unpopular one and this is the way he approaches his interactions with his patients as well. Honesty and forthrightness are the themes of this episode and taking these ideas seriously will pay dividends now and in the future. We certainly learned a lot this episode and we know you will too.
